Where Will You Be Five Years From Now – Still Dreaming or Actually Doing?

Where Will You Be Five Years From Now – Still Dreaming or Actually Doing?

Dee Britton

Recently I read a story about a shoe-shine lady who worked at Phoenix airport. This lady was friendly and happy, even though she started work in the early hours of the morning and worked long days.

She had just found out that her daughter had won a cheerleading contest and she was so proud of her. Her daughter was hoping to go to cheerleading camp in Dallas but the mother had no idea how she was going to find the money to buy her uniform and plane ticket, let alone pay for the camp tuition.

The shoe-shine lady loved to share her life with her customers and from the stories she told it was obvious that she loved her family, made friends easily and was a natural born communicator. She was well spoken, carried herself well and was very friendly. She also clearly enjoyed shining shoes.

It was great that she did enjoy her work as she had been doing it for 5 years.

When the shoe-shine lady was not busy with her customers she would pass the time by reading popular novels, vicariously living in someone else’s imagined romance. She would always have a pile of them sitting dog eared by the wall of her shoe-shine stand.

It just makes me wonder – what if?

What if, instead of spending ten or fifteen minutes here and there, between customers, lost in the pages of those romantic novels, she had spent the last five years reading books that were generally life changing?

What if her stack of books included Napolen Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, Steven Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, David Bach’s Smart Women Finish Rich?

Where would she be today?

The shoe-shine woman was good with people, a hard worker, a good reader and clearly enjoyed what she did. She had talent, personality and basic life skills to accomplish a lot more than just living off tips from shining the shoes of people who could afford to pay for their kid’s uniforms, plane tickets and camp tuition.

Why was she spending her life building other people’s dreams and not her own?

Now I am sure that you have heard this before – Your income tends to equal the average of the incomes of your five best friends. What if she was spending more time around people with significantly higher incomes than her own? What if she had been associating with powerful people, successful people, mentors, leaders? She was a terrific conversationalist and could be doing this easily.

If she had been doing this for the past 5 years, where would she be today?

Now I am not saying that people who live on modest incomes or work in simple occupations don’t live lives rich in relationships and joy, just as wealthy people aren’t always extremely happy. And I am not saying that people shouldn’t get carried away in popular novels. But when it is clear that people are struggling and want to get more out of life, then why don’t they have it? Why aren’t they living a fulfilled and successful life? Why aren’t they doing things to help move forward?

This woman had so much potential but was stuck shining shoes.

What was missing?

I am definitely in the doing phase at the moment. Building my business while also studying and going travelling lol. I do wonder sometimes where I would be now if I had started doing years ago. I will just have to catch up!
